What is the legal status of Sanghamitra?

 

Sanghamitra is a Society registered in July 2000  under the Andhra Pradesh (Telangana Area) Public Societies Registration Act, 1350 Fasli (Act 1 of 1350 F.) with registration number   5652.  It is a not-for-profit non-government organization, in India.

 

What is its vision?

 

Sanghamitra aims to create a reliable and acceptable model of social regeneration by initiating people’s movement for basic necessities and empowering for their integrated development. 

 

What is its mission?

 

The mission of the Sanghamitra is to engage in the task of integrated human development for the advancement of individuals, families and communities. 

 

Who can become a Member of Sanghamitra?

 

Individuals who have a positive and proactive attitude towards integrated development of the community at large and who subscribe to the vision, mission and objectives of the Society and by paying  a nominal subscription fee.

 

Who carries out the affairs of the Society?

 

The day-today affairs of the Society are managed by its Secretary under the superintendence and control of the Executive Committee.  The Chairman of the Executive Committee is the President of the Society.  Presently Mr Abhimanyu Acharya, who has been actively associated with rural based NGOs over a decade, is the President.  The Secretary is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Society. 

 

The members of the Committee are drawn from social services, academics and professionals from  fields such as engineering, accountancy and management. 

 

Where does Sanghamitra operate?

 

Sanghamitra is presently involved with a variety of development initiatives in Chegunta, Toopran and Ramayampet mandals (clusters of villages) of Medak District of Andhra Pradesh, covering a population of a little over two hundred thousands.  It hopes to cover the entire district of Medak with various programmes over a period of time. 

 

[ Medak District is one of the most backward districts of Andhra Pradesh.  The three mandals in which Sanghamitra is involved are poor in terms of employment, literacy, health care and other infrastructure   facilities like road and transport, water supply & sanitation.    Farming activities are totally dependent on rain]. 

 

What is the present focus of involvement?

 

¾ Forming and strengthening Self Help Groups (SHGs) of women ¾ Providing Comprehensive Eye Care Services  ¾  Preventing and controlling of child trafficking and HIV/AIDS ¾ Village libraries ¾ Promoting community health including alternative systems of health care ¾ Initiating income generating activities among women and differently challenged persons ¾ Providing drinking water facilities  ¾ Undertaking awareness building programmes on health and development matters

 

What does Sanghamitra believe in while planning various initiatives?

 

Sanghamitra believes in working with the people and not just for the people.  The plans made are people centered and are in participation with the community.  At the implementation level also participation of the people  in the form of extending financial support or providing material and other resources or both is ensured. 

 

What are the achievements since inception in 2000?

 

¾  Formation of 140 Self Help Groups (SHGs) of women (each group consists of 10-15 members) and supporting every member of the group  with a seed money of Rs. 2000  each to start income generating activities / to meet unforeseen expenses.  ¾  Setting up of 10 village libraries  ¾  Facilitating 418 cataract surgeries free of charge  ¾  Facilitating drilling of 17 tube wells ¾Facilitating assistance to differently challenged persons  ¾ Identifying, counselling and extending assistance to HIV/AIDS affected persons  ¾ Conducting health camps (community and school levels) for general health check up and eye screening) for referrals and treatment ¾ Promoting organic farming and introducing cultivation of different crops suiting to different kinds of soil. ¾ Promoting community health including alternative systems of medicine ¾ Networking with NGOs for carrying out advocacy and lobbying on issues related to health, education, child rights and child labour ¾ Establishing close working collaboration with government and other NGOs.  (Approximately 45 Rupees makes  One US dollar)

 

What are the future plans?

 

¾  Striving towards achieving 100% literacy  ¾ Facilitating accessibility of drinking water to all the house holds ¾  Facilitating provision of  sanitation facilities in all the villages ¾ Creating income generating employment avenues to as many people as possible -- at least one from each family  ¾  Facilitating availability  of affordable and accessible health care ¾  Providing housing facilities to the poor ¾ Training of farmers for multiple cultivation of different crops for generating more income ¾  Readmitting the school drop-outs ¾ Promoting kitchen gardens and community gardens for vegetables and fruits and medicinal and aromatic plants ¾ Promoting cooperatives for farming and marketing and selling of produce

 

The existing projects will continue to be in operation at least in the next 2-4 years in accordance with the understanding with the project partners.  Empowering people to demand their rights to education, health care and development is an ongoing process.

q   construction of training center (for training of farmers, youth, women and children)
q HIV/AIDS awareness building programmes including setting up of testing and treatment  centres

q promotion of social forestry both for creating a healthy ecological environment and 

income generation avenues by adopting plantation and maintenance of a certain number of trees
